Embrace the suck.
When you’re learning a new skill, like, say, lettering… or illustration… or playing the piano… after the initial fast paced exciting phase of actually learning the techniques and managing to come up with some decent works, there comes an inevitable time when you just have to… practice. And practice. And then practice some more. And this phase is a LOT slower than the first one. Progress isn’t so obvious anymore. You see little to no improvements from one work to another, which can get you easily frustrated and the excitment is gone! This is the time when you feel like you don’t want to go on, you feel like quitting, or just being lazy. But feeling like you want to quit, doesn’t FORCE you to quit! Because you know that this dreadful, boring practice is exactly what will eventually lead you to your own style and voice and to awesome, master level work. So by affirming silly things like this one to yourself, you can get a little motivation to go on. Engage consciously with the boring, repetitive practice. Honor the struggle. Embrace the suck.
